William R. Phipps is a member and shareholder in the law firm of Phipps, Geis & Brach, P.A. He is an experienced trial attorney with 28 years of practice. His practice is limited exclusively to family law cases and divorce mediation.
Mr. Phipps received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina in 1978, cum laude, and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1982. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar later that same year. Thereafter, Mr. Phipps began active duty in the United States Navy as an officer in the Judge Advocate General Corps and served on active duty until 1989. During his period of active duty, Mr. Phipps was stations in San Diego, California and Charleston, South Carolina. He also served on board the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). Mr. Phipps continued to remain active in the United States Naval Reserve until his retirement in 2006 as a Commander.
Upon discharge from active duty in 1989, Mr. Phipps was employed as an attorney at the law firm of Bethea, Jordan and Griffin, P.A., on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina until 1995 when he established his solo practice dedicated to family law. In that same year, Mr. Phipps was elected to the Family Law Section Counsel (FLSC) of the South Carolina Bar and lectured for the first time at the Annual “Hot Tips” family law continuing legal education (CLE) seminar. Mr. Phipps has continued to write materials for and speak annually at various South Carolina Bar sponsored family law CLE seminars from 1995 through 2009. (Link to list of seminar presentations). Mr. Phipps remained a member of the FLSC until 2009 and was its Chairman in 2000. He also served as an officer of the Beaufort County Bar for several years and was its President in 2000.
Mr. Phipps has served as a member of the Board of Editors for two books, Marital Litigation In South Carolina Substantive Law, Second Edition and Marriage and Divorce Law in South Carolina, A Layperson's Guide. Mr. Phipps additionally helped draft and edit the South Carolina Family Lawyers’ Tool Kit 2003 Edition which was created and written by the 2002-2003 FLSC.
In 2001, Mr. Phipps and Mr. Geis formed Phipps & Geis, P.A., the first and only law firm on Hilton Head Island that was dedicated exclusively to the practice of family law. In 2009, Ms. Brach joint the firm as a shareholder and Phipps, Geis & Brach, P.A. continues to practice solely in the area of family law.
Mr. Phipps is a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. He is married and his hobbies include photography, hiking, raising and exercising their four dogs.
